Mechanical Engineering, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT): The One and Only Mechanical Engineering Department among all the other Thai universities to make its place in World University Raking by Academic Subjects of ARWU, 2017
University ranking conducted by various international organizations provides opportunities to see overall image and potential of Thai universities that could lead to improvement and development in order to be compatible with other countries. At present, QS World University Rankings (QS, UK), Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE, UK), and Academic Ranking of World Universities (previously, ARWU by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, People’s Republic of China)are the most famous ones to rank universities based on various criteria.
Apart from ranking of world universities, this is for the first time that ARWU announced subject wise rankings too. In 2017 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, institutions are ranked in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.. Mechanical Engineering of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) is the only one from all the other Thai universities which found its place in the 151-200 quartiles (from 300 universities all over the world) because of its outstanding number of citations. ARWU uses 5 objective indicators for global ranking of academic subjects, such as:
PUB is the number of papers authored by an institution in an Academic Subject during the period of 2011-2015. Only papers of ‘Article’ type are considered. Data are collected from InCites database. Papers in different Web of Science categories are grouped into relevant Academic Subjects
Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) is the ratio of citation of papers published by an institution in an Academic Subject during the period of 2011-2015 to the average citation of papers in the same category, of the same year and same type. A CNCI value of 1 represents world-average performance while a value above 1 represents performance above the world average. Only papers of ‘Article’ type are considered. Data are collected from InCites database.
International collaboration (IC) is the number of publications that have been found with at least two different countries in addresses of the authors divided by the total number of publications in an Academic Subject for an institution during the period of 2011-2015. Only papers of ‘Article’ type are considered. Data are collected from InCites database.
TOP is the number of papers published in Top Journals in an Academic Subject for an institution during the period of 2011-2015. Top Journals are identified through ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Excellence Survey or by Journal Impact Factor. In 2017, 94 top journals selected by the Survey are used in rankings of 33 Academic Subjects.. For Academic Subjects that do not have journals identified by the Survey, the JCR top 20% journals are used. Top 20% journals are defined as their Journal Impact Factors in the top 20% of each Web of Science category according to Journal Citation Report (JCR) 2015, and then aggregated into different Academic Subjects. Only papers of ‘Article’ type are considered. In the Academic Subject of Public Health, although a top journal is selected by the Survey, there is no ‘Article’ type paper on it, therefore JCR top 20% journals are used, instead.
AWARD refers to the total number of the staff of an institution wining a significant award in an Academic Subject. Staff is defined as those who work full-time at an institution at the time of winning the prize. If a researcher was retired at the time of winning the award, we count the institution where the researcher’s last full-time academic position was at. The significant awards in each subject are identified through Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Excellence Survey.
If a winner is affiliated with more than one institution at the time of winning the award, each institution is assigned the reciprocal of the number of institutions. If the award is awarded to more than one winner in one year, weights are set for winners according to their proportion of the prize. Different weights are set according to the periods of winning the prizes. The weight is 100% for winners in 2011-2015, 75% for winners in 2001-2010, 50% for winners in 1991-2000, and 25% for winners in 1981-1990.

Prof. Dr. Somchai Wongwises from Department of Mechanical Engineering, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) mentioned that Department of Mechanical Engineering KMUTT, provides education in Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. programs with major focus on education, research, social service, and industrial service. So far, excellent research has been conducted with an effort to solve practical, social and industrial problems that create impact on economic and social situations of the country. KMUTT’s prominence in research is evident from the several research university rankings received by it. Education and research has to be consistent and collaborative. University lecturers should not just teach but should also conduct some research work. They should work together with their students to train new quality generation. Lecturers engaging in research will gain more insight to their field of study than lecturers who just only teaches. In addition, research work will enable lecturers, both, to teach more enjoyably and also to increase their self-confidence. As an outcome, students will gain more knowledge and experience outside textbooks. This approach will finally provide both quality graduates and quality results.
Prof. Dr. Somchai Wongwises also added that in ARWU ranking by Academic Subjects 2017, the higher-than-average score in Category Normalized Citation Impact at 66.5 received by Mechanical Engineering Department, KMUTT, has placed us among the first 300 universities. Due to the fact that there are very minute differences in the respective scores received by the universities, the ranking has been divided into groups, for example, 151-200 and 201-300. Therefore, a slight increase or decrease of scores could immensely affect the ranking in the forthcoming years.
