Encouraging regional startups to think of Drone beyond Toys

Throughout time, the business world has been driven by technological advancements and data utilizations. Fast adoption of technology and quick access to data has been crucial for businesses to succeed and compete with one and another. As a result, the second batch of DATATHON is hosted under the concept of “Drone as a Service”. At DATATHON II, regional startups are encouraged to create services from drone that evolves its current applications by leveraging rising technology, such as cloud and data analytics. The DATATHON II is initiative from the collaboration of C asean, T.C.C. Technology Co., Ltd. (TCCtech), Ministry of Science and Technology (Republic of Lao), Faculty of Engineering of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thoth Zocial Co., Ltd. and National Innovation Agency (Public Organization).

Dream Office, under the supervision of Mr. Vichate Tantiwanich, Chairman of Executive Board, C A C Co., Ltd. or C asean, addressed that “DATATHON II is an ideation process extracted by startups through their pitching presentation on the stage. The innovative ideas of drone should stimulate numerous forms of services provided to the market. The competition will be held on November 30 – December 2, 2017.”

Mr. Voradis Vinyaratn, Executive Director and Acting Managing Director of T.C.C. Technology Co. Ltd., stated “TCC Technology is the main supporter for DATATHON II to encourage the creativity and widen opportunities for the new-gen startups. We believe that the drone technology is able to be more than just a “TOY” or merely “FLY-ING” Camcorder. Today we provide “Leap GIO Public” – a platform for developers to build and create applications on the cloud system. DATATHON aims to help startups develop competencies and acquire knowledge that will result in new experiences that will benefit the society”.

In addition, Mr. Vilaysone Bouphalad – Deputy Director General of Department of Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Science and Technology, Lao PDR said “Science, Technology and Innovation are the key driving forces for rapid economic growth. To strengthen the fields of Science, Technology and Innovation for industrialization and modernization as well as the innovative economy are the key mission of Ministry of Science and Technology, Lao PDR. Joining as part of DATATHON II, we anticipate the synergy in term of innovation between 2 countries leverage technology like cloud and drone technology.”

On the academic side, Assist. Prof. Annop Ruangwiset, a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, further revealed the concept of future technology regarding drones. “Drone is technology that is being quickly adopted across various industries, from filming and photography in the entertainment industry to geographical mapping. With drones, tremendous opportunities exist, especially if we could develop and apply it to local context. As a result, significant innovation and values will be generated, thus, helping the nation to realize Thailand 4.0. For instance, newer generation of automotive and smart electronic devices through IoT demands will help stimulate the needs in building newer breeds of scientists to support this specific technology. Moreover, infrastructures, such as hardware and software, must be aligned in respects to research and development in order to accelerate economic growth.”

Mr. Kla Tangsuwan, Chief Executive Officer, Thoth Zocial Co., Ltd. added “it’s undeniable that in the current world, data is the main part of every organization in drive their business. Data can be added value through data analytics tool either for Social Data at Thoth Zocial or in the DATATHON. The Data allows organizations to take the fullest advantages of the world”

National Innovation Agency (Public Organization) or NIA has continuously driven innovation in Thailand, as well as foresees the benefits of utilizing drones. In the past, NIA has continuously supported projects that innovation through the use of drones and encourage Thai entrepreneurs and startups to develop and tailor solutions from drones in the form of application and solutions for smart farming, surveillance and monitoring for commercial and social purpose.

Datathon II’s aims of fostering innovations through the use drones aligns with the strategic direction of both, the private and public sector. It is a platform filled with opportunities for entrepreneurs and startups to showcase their innovative ideas and leverage on the data analytics technology. UAV has the assist humans in reducing risk, time, and costs for industrial purposes.

Teams participating in DATATHON must consist of at least 2 members including a developer, creatives and marketer. Members should have English proficiency and is eager to learn and take on challenges. A total of 40 participants (8 teams) from Thailand and Lao PDR will join the competition. Content will be provided all 3 days event starting from orientation to ideation to prototype to pitching. Participants will have the chance to win prize worth 100,000 baht.
